Hang Gliding and Paragliding in Madeira and Porto Santo Islands

"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci dreamt of flight and inspired others to make the dream come true. Paragliding is the simplest form of human flight.

The main difference between hang gliding and paragliding is the configuration of the wings. The wings of a hang glider resemble a V-shape and are constructed with a solid frame as opposed to the paragliding wing structure, which is soft, and take on a more oval-shaped shape.

Paragliding’s flight is done at slower speeds. Hang gliders have the speed but rely more on the environment than do paragliders.

Certainly, whether you choose to enjoy either sport the experience will be incredible.

These activities offer the change to get awesome views of the natural landscape of Madeira and Porto Santo Islands from the sky, enjoying the amazing experience of flight.

The archipelago offers excellent spots to take off in a hang-glider or a paraglider. Some of the most popular are Pico da Cruz, Miradouro da Madalena, Porto da Cruz and Prazeres area.

Several associations, like Aeroclube of Madeira, Madeira Paragliding Hang Gliding Association and Madeira Free Flight Association, are spread throughout the island offering hang gliding and paragliding tours, hang gliding and paragliding lessons, and advice on equipment. Tandem paraglider flights offer a safe air experience for anyone wanting to participate in the thrill of free flying without going through the learning process. The passenger and pilot each sit in their own harness and are attached to each other and to the paraglider by spreader bars.

Every year free flight competitions such as the Paragliding Open or the Madeira Paragliding Championship are held in the archipelago.
