Surf in Madeira and Porto Santo Islands

Surf in Madeira and Porto Santo Islands

Surf is a relatively recent modality in Madeira Island, being introduced about four years ago, when it was recognized that the region has excellent conditions to offer, obtaining a “Surf quality” certificate through the publications in specified journals.
Given its geographical location, Madeira Island is a privileged location to receive “North Atlantic swells”, having all sorts of waves, from “point breaks” to “reef breaks”, being considered one of the best locations in Europe to practice this sport, where the world cup has been held and where other international surf events take place.
Steep and clashed hillsides, rocks and bottom of the sea rocks, produce excellent waves and phenomenal outputs. However it is advisable to take some precautions and beware of rock formations and the pebble beach, which covers most of beaches in Madeira.
The subtropical and mild climate invites you to practice this sport through the year, with temperatures ranging between 15ºC and 21ºC. However the best months to surf are the months in the “off-season”.
The “spots” that are most searched for by surfers is Ponta Pequena (Between Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar), Lower part of Ponta do Sol. However, if you´re inexperienced and in the North Coast, in particular São Vicente, is an ideal location.
Go in direction of the waves and discover the surf potential that Madeira has to offer.
